CUMA is a “Hybrid Fighting System” designed to develop a practitioner’s skills in the art of PRACTICAL martial art applications. It focuses on all ranges of
practical armed and unarmed combat.
The four fighting ranges in CUMA are:
1) Outside striking range
2) Close range striking
3) Standing grappling and throws
4) Ground fighting
Names of techniques or tags are not important in CUMA For example, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Aikido and Chin Na all have joint locks and they are all called
by different names within their respective systems. The same thing applies to the front snap kick, horse stance, the high block, eye jab, etc… In fact, if
you are an experienced martial artist, you will probably have plenty of “we do something just like that in our system, it’s called….” moments.
Tags become meaningless in any level of combat, whether on the battlefield, in the ring, or on the street. After all, in a fight it does not matter if
you call a front thrust kick a push kick, does it? But there are tags in CUMA, and they are used for teaching purposes only.
The self defense techniques in CUMA are designed and practiced in a flow pattern so that the line of combinations become invisible and techniques are
no longer individual, but one. CUMA focuses on the practical application of the technique and movement itself so the practitioner can become one with
it. For example, there may be 30 self defense techniques used in succession, but all 30 should blend into one flowing technique.
The CUMA system was founded by Waysun “Johnny” Tsai in 2002. The core of CUMA is based on Master Johnny’s 30+ years of personal martial art
expertise in Shaolin Chuan Fa Kung Fu, Tai Kit Kuen Kung Fu, as well as countless seminars and private training in a variety of other arts.
CUMA is about TRADITION, PROGRESSION, and EVOLUTION. It is greater and less than any one system, it is complete and incomplete.
CUMA is the concept of no concept. We do not focus on theory, only on application.
This is the TAO of CUMA
